And the 2006 College Scholarship Winners Are---

Katie Garland and Beatriz Guzman, recipients of the 2006 Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild College Scholarship, were introduced to the Guild members and guests at the March 11 meeting. Each of the winners will receive $1,000 to be paid to the college of her choice upon enrollment.

Garland is a senior at Harlingen High School where she maintains a 3.04 Grade Point Average (GPA).  Guzman is a senior at Edinburg North High School and has a GPA of 100.39.  Both students are involved in extracurricular activities such as art, band, music and orchestra.

The young women briefly described their college plans. Garland plans to pursue a business education at Toccoa Falls College, Georgia.  She wants to earn a cosmetology license and then establish a fashion design business that will serve her clients’ total beauty and fashion needs.

“I have spent most of my life drawing clothes and trying to come up with new fashion designs.  I am very interested in helping people be the best that they can be externally, though I know that internal beauty is the most important thing,” stated Garland in her application.

Guzman plans to attend the University of Texas Pan-American in Edinburg where she will major in art and plans to be an art teacher.  She showed sketches of her original clothing designs that are part of her Advanced Placement portfolio.

“I have creativity running through my blood and this is why I cannot live without it.  Without art, the world cannot function the right way.  Art is essential to life, to everyone and to me,” said Guzman.

Jean Ann Mayhew will present the $1,000 scholarship award letter on May 11 to Garland at Harlingen High School, and Florea Flores has agreed to present Guzman’s scholarship award on May 16 at Edinburg North High School.

Garland is the daughter of Daniel and Sue Garland, and Guzman is the daughter of Rito and Maria Guzman. Sue Garland and Maria Guzman attended the Guild meeting and were introduced to the group.

The 2006 College Scholarship winners appear to have all the attributes needed for success:  scholastic achievement, creativity, determination, social grace and poise.  You go, Girls!         (Pictures here)
